The New York City Playground Program is a collaborate effort with the Trust for Public Land, the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Education, school students and community stakeholders. The Program transforms underutilized schoolyards into vibrant recreational spaces which capture and retain storm water within the project area using green infrastructure.

The cornerstone of the program is a three month participatory design process which is an integral part of the school’s curriculum engaging the students, teachers and community to be active participants in the design of their new playground. Fostering community stewardship is another goal of this participatory design process and significant strides have been made in the long term maintenance of the new playground. Sustainable initiatives include promoting water efficiency through planting native species, collecting water on site and directing it to rain gardens, reducing impervious surfaces, increasing tree canopy coverage as well as providing on site recycling and incorporating outdoor classrooms.

Each new playground incorporates these green infrastructure techniques to capture a minimum of 1” of rainfall over the entire site per storm event. To date, SiteWorks has completed 20 Playgrounds under the Trust for Public Land’s program, with an additional eight more in the early stages of design or construction.
